For the 1932 Cleveland Air Races, the Wedell-Williams company had three airplanes ready to go, all basically the same except for minor variations. Raced as numbers"92","44" and "121", they would've slaughtered all competition had it not been for the unstoppable GeeBee flown by Jimmy Doolittle. In the Thompson Trophy race they placed 2nd,3rd and 4th behind Doolittle. In the Bendix Trophy portion of the races they managed win, place and show! In the Shell Petroleum Speed Dash for women, Mary Haizlip took first in number 92.
The painting is of the one and only, the flamboyant Roscoe Turner in number 121 - the "Gilmore Lion", coming out of a turn with the Hall Bulldog nipping at his heels.

This painting was commissioned by
Williams Brothers Model Products for the box top of the
recently re-released version of their 1/32 scale Wedell-Williams kit.
