ROBERT KARR, ARTIST
THE LATEST:
APR 16, 2008 A busy beginning to the month of April! First, the art display in conjunction with the screening of "Beautiful Dreamer - Love Will Bring You Home" at the Westminster Rose Center on April 4 was a success, generating a lot of interest. It looked really nice, too, with a selection of varying size original paintings accompanied by descriptive labels. An unusual treat for us was that we were able to display a 3-D piece! "Cia's Airport Cafe" is a diorama of my (the wife's) dream, and with the sheltered, indoor setup and access to an electrical outlet, we were able to show it off, as well. The silent auction included 1 each of Robert's nose art prints, donated for this fund raising event. Secondly, the "beast" is GONE! The CAMEL model that killed most of 2007, and almost the marriage (and Robert), was finally delivered to the Client. The delivery included a terrific PERK! So, Tuesday the 8th Robert carefully cuddled the "beast" into its custom harness in the back of a van and we drove up the California Coast, to Central Coast Wine Country. Old-timers would still prefer to call it Cattle Country, but the change appears inevitable. Wednesday morning we headed out to the private airstrip to deliver the "beast" to its new home in a hangar amongst full-size, flying WWI airplanes. The TREAT: Robert got a ride in the Strutter 1 1/2! This is a reproduction WWI airplane and is, as far as we know, the only flying WWI two-seater airplane with a rotary engine. It has a genuine GNOME engine - a true rotary engine, the kind that makes the flying-machine noises in old, old movies, and sounds like it's about to quit at any moment. And - it spews Castor oil all over anything and -body behind it. A smell an afficionado definitely covets! After three take-offs and landings and some low-level sight-seeing, Robert stepped out of the machine with a grin on his face that just didn't know where to end... Needless to say, the drive back home was filled with somewhat disjointed tales, a monologue requiring only grunts from the companion.
